1. New Delhi, India

Delhi has earned the dubious distinction of becoming the most polluted major city in the world with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 527, according to a report by private weather forecasting agency Skymet. The city suffers from air pollution caused by road dust and industry, with comparatively smaller contributions from unclean engines in transportation, especially diesel-powered city buses and trucks, and 2-wheelers and 3-wheelers with two-stroke engines. During the autumn and winter months, some 500 million tons of crop residue are burnt, and winds blow from India's north and northwest towards east. Gurgaon in the National Capital Region or NCR is the world's 2nd most polluted city according to data. It is also a hub of more than 300 big and small industries that often flout the air pollution norms. The massive construction activity in the region also aggravates the dust problem. At present, Gurugram has only two monitoring stations to check the air quality of the city.

3. Sukinda, India


Sukinda is a town in Jajpur district, Odisha, India. Orissa's Sukinda valley is among the top ten worst polluted city in the world. Odisha accounts for about 98% of the total proved chromite (chromium ore) reserves of the country, of which about 97% occur in the Sukinda Valley. This area is also flood-prone, resulting in further contamination of the waterways.

The city is famous for its leather and textile industries. Among the major causes of air pollution in Kanpur are industrial sector, vehicles, road dust and domestic cooking. The industrial sector is the biggest cause of air pollution in Kanpur. 

5. Linfen, China


Linfen is a prefecture-level city in the southwest of Shanxi province, People's Republic of China, bordering Shaanxi province to the west. It is situated along the banks of the Fen River. Mining, cooking, smelting and other heavy industries which developed around the city have led to catastrophic environmental damage. The city has ranked at the bottom of the World Bank's air quality rankings.

6. Tianying, China

Regarded as the spiritual capital of India, the city draws Hindu pilgrims who bathe in the Ganges River’s sacred waters and perform funeral rites. Along the city's winding streets are some 2,000 temples. The dust from construction works in Varanasi was the major cause of pollution. The report explains that poor mobility is one of the major causes of pollution triggered by traffic congestion due to encroachment, lack of parking spaces, road width and condition, lack of pedestrian and cycling space — all responsible for the choking air pollution in the holy city. 

9. Bamenda, Cameroon


Bamenda, also known as Abakwa and Mankon Town, is a city in northwestern Cameroon and capital of the Northwest Region. The city has a population of about 2 million people and is located 366 kilometres north-west of the Cameroonian capital, Yaoundé. In Cameroon approximately 7,000 deaths each year are associated to air pollution.
